A quick reminder about two three upcoming concerts:

On Thursday, February 12, David Stock leads the Duquesne Contemporary Music Ensemble in premieres by Andrew Kaiser and Paul Richards.

On Saturday, February 14, Mattin performs at Future Tenant with local improvisation artists Michael Johnsen, Melissa St. Pierre, and Tusk Lord. 

Update: On Sunday February 15, The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble performs at Carnegie Mellon’s Alumni Hall with local artists Michael Boyd and Ryan Socrates

Berlin-based improv trio No Triangle at Frick Fine Arts

This concert is co-sponsored with Music on the Edge.

No Triangle are a Berlin-based trio of improvisers which includes Magda Mayas (inside piano), Anthea Caddy (cello) and Annette Krebs (guitar and electronics). Their abstract sound is characterized by precise shifts, accelerations and disruptions, spanning the genres of chamber music, noise, musique concrete, and improvisation. Developing their own idiosyncratic language – based on the articulation of gesamtklang (total sound), as opposed to just pitch and harmony -the trio explores texture, space and instrument, generating a intertwining relationship of the electronic and the acoustic. Improvisation concerts coming up in December

There are some great opportunities to hear improvisation coming up in December. I’ve just posted two improvisation concerts courtesy Dave Bernabo to the Events Calendar. Baltimore improvisor John Berndt is playing this Sunday (Nov. 30) at Monks Place, and Dave Bernabo will perform with Ben Harris, Kerrith Livengood (both of Alia Musica fame), Johan Nystrom and more on December 9 at Drawn in Cafe. JOHN BERNDT (co-founder of Baltimore’s High Zero Festival of Experimental Improvised Music) performing solo (on electronics, reeds, inventions, etc.)and in duo with

MICHAEL JOHNSEN (on homebuilt electronics and musical saw.)

the concert will begin with an improvised set by

DAVE BERNABO (guitar, etc.)

STEVE BOYLE (electronics, percussion)

EDGAR UM BUCHOLTZ (cornet, etc.)

and

MATT WELLINS (homebuilt electronics, reeds, etc.)

John Berndt is the co-founder of the High Zero festival in Baltimore, whichs hosts musicians from all over the world on an annual basis. John also runs the Recorded Music label, which has released many Henry Flynt records and is possibly responsible for bringing him back in style. John is also co-founder of the Red Room performance venue in Baltimore, which regularly hosts adventurous experimental, composed, and jazz music.
