The contemporary music ensemble Alia Musica Pittsburgh will perform its Winter 2009 Chamber Concert on January 25th, at 7pm, at Frick Fine Arts Auditorium in Oakland. As part of Alia Musica’s 2008-9 Season, the event continues to bring to life the music of Pittsburgh composers, this time presenting music by members Kerrith Livengood, Federico Garcia, Matthew Gillespie, and Christopher Ruth, as well as features by guest composers Alec Summers and Christian Kriegeskotte.
The program is made of pieces for two and three performers, with varied instrumentations and groupings. Harpist Julia Scott and double-bass player Dan Morrison join Marcus Kim in a trio with marimba, and Mark Fromm in a trio with bassoon. Rachael Stutzman, Alia Musica’s new principal clarinetist, will be featured in a low-register trio for piano, cello, and bass clarinet, as well as in a duet for clarinet and vibraphone. The program also includes a piece for violin and piano, and a new trio that explores the similarities and the differences of the piano, the guitar, and the marimba.
After Alia Musica’s first chamber concert in January 2008, these intimate events, produced in alternation with its full-scale large ensemble concerts, offer a direct experience of the contemporary exploration of particular instruments. With both traditional and new instrumentations, they have offered a look into this more personal side of new concert music, and have been well received by its audiences as a complement to other new music and other chamber music events in the area.
The Winter 2009 Chamber Concert is co-sponsored by the Music Department of the University of Pittsburgh.

Alia Musica Pittsburgh was created in 2006 by eleven young composers based in Pittsburgh. Since then it has produced nearly 30 premieres of music by emergent composers of the Pittsburgh area, including both members and guests. The group has situated itself firmly in the city’s new music scene, with a regular season comprised of intimate chamber concerts and large-scale concerts featuring large ensembles. Today Alia Musica counts on a regular core performance group, assembled through its first and a half year of existence, and guest performers are invited according to the needs of the composer’s score.Alia Musica”s events and productions to date have been supported in part by grants from the Sprout Fund, the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, and the Pittsburgh Foundation. Alia Musica is a professional outlet for emergent talent, both in composition and in performance, and a unique blend of the professional and the grassroots component of contemporary music.
